Talents You Need as a Graphic Designer

The art of graphic design involves a combination of intuition, natural talent, and learned ability. You need to be well-versed in a variety of artistic techniques and you need to know how to use graphic art programs.

Some of the talents that successful designers have include the following (both technological and artistic):

Knowledge of Blending and Contrasting Color Schemes The most talented artists know which colors blend well together and which ones clash. They also know how to make clashing colors blend.

Furthermore, they are often versed in photo editing and photo manipulation. In fact, the best graphic design articles can restore photos that no one would think are useable. This is a talent that can come naturally, however, training is often provided in this area.

Ability to Create a ‘Story’ The type of art that a graphic creates in is the type that sends an intended (or in some cases unintended). Just think of all the popular brands you know and then observe the logo images associated with that brand.

You will notice that a majority of the logo images created for professional businesses truly do represent that company. The reverse is true as well-that a company without a well-defined logo can seem lost or scattered, without a true identity. The great logo designers will help companies portray a certain image-not take away from it.

Must be able to Fulfill the Wishes of the Customer Above learning expensive, challenging photo editing and graphic arts software is the ability to follow the orders of your customer. As long as your customers like your work you will make money.

If they don’t then they won’t. However, keep in mind that you cannot depend too much on your customer’s opinion. You need to also be able to show that you are confident that you can provide a finished product.

Must be able to Make a Lasting Impression This applies to any field that a graphic designer is involved with. Whether a graphic designer’s role is to help establish a corporate brand or to create small carton pictures they need to be designed with an audience in mind.

Must Be Organized-The “O” word (Organization) to any type of visual artist is often a dirty word graphic artists, who are always thought of as the more “responsible” type of artist. In order to be able to finish projects on time graphic artists need to get it together.

Must be Disciplined-The “D” word (Discipline) for some artists is just as dirty as the “O” word. It happens to even the best graphic designers. They get lazy for a few days and forget they have work to do. That is not a good thing.

Must be able to Create Meaning-This aspect is one that involved the concept of lasting impression made earlier. Those who have made a lasting impression by creating computer and visual hand-drawn projects that people remember have created meaning.

These are the cases in which the image designer creates art then means something. Sometimes that meaning cannot be put into tangible words.

Yet, when done right a creative piece of media can say exactly what the visual artist wanted to say. At the same time, this same work when composed properly simultaneously says what the recipient wanted the graphic visual art work to say as well.

One blogger online has mentioned that graphic artists are people who must be able to inspire and entertain as well as communicate accurate and important messages. That is the best way for a designer to make it big with a company or as a freelancer.

The attributes of a designer may be learned in school to some extent. However, even with all the practice in the world one simple fact remains. A designer either has it or the designer is not a designer.

Keeping Up with the Graphic Design Trends

The field of graphic design is ever changing.  This makes it one of the most exciting fields to work in, but it could also mean that you can easily fall behind on the latest trends.  Keeping up with the latest graphic design trends can seem like a full-time job.  But this can simply be a matter of keeping your eyes and ears open, and staying flexible.  Here are some things you can do as a graphic designer to stay afoot of change in the exciting world of graphic design.

Stay in touch with the latest media

These days, the biggest change seems to come from new media.  There has been a large trend towards multimedia, which mixes various media, including the Internet, film, music, video, print and more.  Stay on top of these changes by subscribing to design magazines and catalogs.  This is an easy way to see what other designers are working on, and to detect changes and new trends as they begin to swell and develop.  You can also visit different design blogs to see what other graphic art designers are working on.

Don’t stop moving-traveling keeps you on top of the latest trends

Many designers fail to take note of how important it is to travel in order to refresh their creative energies, gain new perspective and learn about new trends.  It can be difficult to stay on top of the latest design trends if you are always in the same place.  Not only will travel help be discerned new trends both local and abroad, it can help you keep a fresh outlook on the world.  Not only will this help you uncovered different graphic art design trends, traveling can also serve as a means of inspiration in your own work.

Don’t stop learning- continuing education keeps you on top of trends

One of the easiest ways to stay on top of trends and to keep your skills and talents as a graphic design artist sharp is to continue taking classes in graphic design.  No matter how far along you are in your career as a graphic design artist, there is a very good chance if you can always stand to learn something new.  Many graphic design colleges, Art Institute’s, museums and universities offer advanced to seminars and continuing education classes.  These can be a boon to the graphic design artist who is willing and ready to learn and stay on top of trends.  Even if you don’t have the time or money for continuing education, if you have access to a university or museum, there is a good chance that you can see what is going on in the current design world by attending lectures and museum exhibitions.

Work with as many different graphic design artists as possible

If you are a freelance graphic design artist who works on his or her own, it can be difficult to get a gauge on what is going on in the larger design world.  This is especially true since most of us tend to stay in our own little boxes.  Most graphic designers become comfortable doing a certain type of design or working on similar projects.  This can make it difficult to learn about what is going on in other corners of the graphic design universe.  Fortunately, this is an easy problem to solve.  Simply connecting, talking or working with other graphic design artists can give you a fresh outlook on things.  You can learn about trends that you may not have heard about on your own, and you can see how other graphic design artists tackle the same problems and challenges that you face in your work.

Is Graphic Design Certification Necessary?

One of the biggest arguments that still makes the rounds in the art world is whether art and graphic design can be taught.  Let’s say that you want to be a graphic design artist, but you think this sacrifice of going to school for a graphic design certificate or degree is not worth the trouble.  Is graphic design certification necessary? Do you need a piece of paper with your name on it in order to get a good graphic design job? The short answer is no, you don’t really need a certificate to be a great and successful graphic design artist.  But the long answer is that it sure can’t hurt if you do decide to study to become the best graphic design artist you can be.

There are many different types of graphic design programs.  There are two year or four year graphic design programs that you can take at your local community college or at University.  There are many different schools of thought on graphic design.  Some people believe that two years is simply not enough time to pick up all the tools, history, theory, and practice that you need in order to become a great graphic designer.  However, some people believe that four or more years at a design school or art school is simply too much, and represents too great of a time and money investment.  Although you may be hesitant about investing the time and money it takes in order to graduate with a degree or certificate in graphic design, in today’s competitive world, it is certainly becoming the nearly requisite that graphic design artists have some kind of formal training.

Is it possible to become a graphic design artist without any kind of formal training? Certainly this is possible.  However, it is rare that someone possesses a natural gift for graphic design without any kind of formal training.  Although there definitely exceptions to this rule, most designers without formal education will not have the tools necessary in order to thrive in today’s technology-centered design world. This is certainly not to say that a good education will automatically produce a great graphic design artist.  However, taking at least one design class is generally better than taking no glasses at all.  A good formal education and foundation in the principles of design is more likely to help than hurt you.

Getting a formal education in graphic design also puts you at the forefront of new developments. You can get hands-on training on the latest computer programs and tools, along with the advice and guidance you need in order to learn how to use them properly. Getting a certificate in graphic design helps ensure that you have the proper training with the most popular programs and tools.

One of the strongest arguments for getting a certificate in graphic design is that it can help you get a better job in the future.  With your graphic design degree or certificate in hand, you can prove to prospective employers that you have the skills and discipline that it takes to be successful as a graphic designer.  Having a certificate or degree opens new doors and allows you to work with more clients.  When it comes time to find a graphic design jobs, you will already have professional contacts, including professors and alumni.  Professors are a great source for networking and getting references.  You will also get the benefit of career advice from professors and classmates that you might not otherwise receive. In general, going to school for graphic design and finishing up so that you can graduate with a degree or certificate in hand is almost always a good idea.

Interviewing for that Perfect Design Job

Learning how to interview is an important skill that you have to learn no matter what kind of field you plan on entering.  There are many reasons why you should arrange an interview. First, an interview is necessary in order to apply for a job.  It is a perfect way to introduce you to a potential client or employer.  Finally, even if you don’t manage to get the job, an interview can be good place to receive feedback on your portfolio.  Interviews require you to make a good first impression.  Making a first impression has to do with presenting yourself and your work with confidence.  Here are some other tips on arranging and preparing for that big job interview.

How to arrange a job interview with a prospective employer

Let’s say that you have put together your portfolio, written your resume and are starting to arrange for job interviews. What is the best way to arrange for an interview? First, you should know that you should never show up for an interview without previous arrangements.  Here are some ways he can go about setting up an interview. First, you can set up an interview by letter.  A simple letter of interest can allow you to inquire about job opportunities with the firm or company that you would like to work with. This is a good way to gently introduce yourself to a prospective employer. You may want to submit a small sample of your work, but by all means, keep any unsolicited letters short. Make sure to enclose a clean copy of your resume, as well. You can also attempt to arrange a job interview by phone. Phoning does not allow you to cover the same amount of material that you are able to cover in a letter. You should only call, of course, if you have some kind of introduction to the firm or company.

How to prepare for the big interview

There are many things you can do to prepare for your job interview. First, begin by doing your fair amount of research. You can do research on the art director who will be conducting the interview. You can also find out more about the firm. For instance, if a small ad agency will be interviewing you, you can find out who the firm’s major accounts are. You want to appear genuinely interested in the firm. If you will be getting interviewed for a job at a magazine, you will definitely want to check out recent issues. Look at the names of the people who re currently working at the magazine. These are usually listed at the very front of the magazine in the masthead. If you are going to be interviewed by a book publisher, make sure to visit a bookstore or go online in order to see which books the publishing firm has worked on. You want to appear interested and knowledgeable about the company.

What should you wear to your job interview?

The great thing about being a graphic designer is the casual dress code. You definitely don’t need to overdo it during the interview, although you should make a real effort to look presentable. The general rule of thumb here is that you should dress about as formally as you would for a position at a national bank. Your dress should be neat and precise. If you are unsure, it is best to opt for more conservative dress than less.

What to do when meeting your interviewer

For most jobs in graphic design, there is a good chance that you will be meeting with the art director. Art directors tend to be the ones who take a look at portfolios. As the interviewer looks through your portfolio, you should avoid the urge to apologize for certain pieces or over explain things. Let the portfolio speak for itself. Sometimes the art director will ask to keep your portfolio for a day. This is relatively standard, as many art directors simply don’t have the time to look through all the art portfolios they get in one day of interviewing. If you have an online web portfolio, make sure that the interviewer or art director knows how to find it online.

How to Know if Becoming a Graphic Designer is Right for You

So you want to become a graphic designer? Do you really believe you have what it takes? It is considered a very respectable profession, but that there are a few things you need to be aware of along the way.

One graphic artist relays his message to others. He writes about how they recruit graphics designers now as if it is so easy and anybody can do it. However, for him it was not always that way. Not only that, but according to this article it appears that his school had made it as if anyone could just do it.

Anybody that would like to be able to do would have a great chance of succeeding in this field. However, the point that this person was making is that it is not as easy as one would like to think. It is not always easy in training and not always easy after you get hired onto a company.

The frustration in this field does not end upon first hire for some people. If they cannot keep up with current technology they will be out of business for good.

In fact, it gets difficult as a person ages sometimes as well. Middle-aged to senior employees who still have quite a bit of talent deal with the pressure to keep up at work.

Otherwise, they could be replaced by newer, younger, fresher, faster, or more talented artists. Many loyal near-retirees have lost lucrative positions this way.

Another issue that could affect the future of technology is the discovery that computers are now easy enough for children to use. Just count the number of children between 5 and 18, for instance, and figure out for yourself how many of them use the computer.

It is often thought of as a challenging and rewarding career. However, it is also someone unpredictable and stressful. Furthermore, it is a very expensive business to start if you want to promote high-quality images and art work.

Furthermore, it can be a time-consuming process to join the forces of a freelance career in graphic arts. However, if you have a real passion and you do not mind working hard then this may be the right career for you.

It helps to have some talent in that area as well, and it helps if you believe in your self. Parts of this article may be harsh, and not meant to scare anyone. It is just the cold, hard truth.

Freelancing does not come easy for everyone, but determined people seem to think it is worth for them to be able to do what they love to do the most-create art. So, if this article has not scared you out of freelance writing it may be time for you to think of some reasons why you would love to be in this career.

It is because you have an eye for blending color? Do you like the satisfaction of a job well done? Is it a means by which to express what is inside of you? It could be all of the above if you want it to be.

If you are really sure this is what you want to do deep down in the pit of your stomach than it may be wise for you to take a chance. In this case, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get ready for what you always have wanted to do!

Other positives aspects of freelance graphic art careers-One aspect is that it is a job field that experiences a steady rate of economic growth.

It is about average for the job of its field. Even though you may need to work hard to be accepted as a freelance artist, once you get in the door it is likely to be easier for you in some ways.

It may never be totally smooth sailing for you as life never is. However, if you apply yourself and never lose your spirit you will advance in this career as far as you are willing to go. Most likely those who watch over you will be proud.
